As I look at these photos, I am hard pressed to find words… This family couldn’t be more precious. The first time we tried to take photos, a random thunderstorm decided to open up the heavens and DRENCH us!!! I have only been rained out of a photo shoot twice (I typically do a pretty good job of guessing and rescheduling sessions if we have a threat of rain). BOTH times have been in the last 3 months!!! So we rescheduled and on a very humid and warm evening 3 days later, in North Alabama, we made what I can only describe as “magic” on our 17 acres at Five Oaks Farm. I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter family on a more gorgeous evening (although, a little less humidity would have been nice. lol)
I had the pleasure of photographing their middle daughter as a newborn 5 years ago… I can’t even describe to you how happy it makes me to see them come back. It’s the highest compliment I can think of! These little years go by in such a flash, and I am so glad they value these moments enough to document them in this way. <3

You have heard me go on and on about “when they grow up”… About how important photos are because some day they will grow wings and fly. This family hasn’t all been in the same place together since 2002!!!
Well… This group of amazing humans haven’t all been together since 2012! Her babies have all grown up and are exploring their own great adventures, so when the stars aligned and she realized they would all be in the same place at the same time, she immediately started researching photographers so she could get some family photos taken. After getting off of the phone, it was all I could do to not smile. Her greatest wish would be happening, and I was going to get to take photos of her joy. All of her favorite people would be in one place at the same time. I was excited!
When they pulled up, and they started chatting, I couldn’t help but relax and enjoy the time. They love to laugh and it was quite evident that they simply enjoy being around each other.
Thank you Kimi for choosing me to help you remember such a special time. I hope you love these images as much as I do. <3

Aren’t they the CUTEST family?!?!?! I had the beautiful experience of taking their family portraits when their oldest was about a year old. (check out their first photo shoot here <3 ) I love watching families grow. To see the young ones get bigger and to see how their love grows as more babies are added to their lives is an amazing privileged.
The older my own children get, the more I realize I forget so many of the little things. My husband will say “remember when…” and the memory will come flooding back, immediately followed with a moment of regret/guilt that I had forgotten in the first place. It’s important to take time to document your moments. The value of these photos aren’t that they are a visual representation of what they looked like, but that these images will be a visual gateway to all of the amazing memories from this time in their life. THAT is why it’s so important. THAT is why they are so valuable. THAT is why I love photography so much.
We had a gorgeous evening on Five Oaks Farm as a backdrop. I love having the whole property to ourselves so everyone can just relax, run, play and explore without any fear or concern of strangers. The space and diversity of the different spaces to choose from is luxurious for me as a photographer. ;-)
His “head hug” is seriously the sweetest thing ever. All of my kids have done this to their younger siblings at one time or another and I just can’t help but get sentimental when I see it. These details that bring back the sweet memories are honestly why I started pursuing photography to begin with. I don’t ever want to forget, and I don’t want you to either. <3

How do I even begin to explain how privileged I feel when one of my friends choose to ask me to document their family. Choosing a photographer can be difficult. Finding a photographer you truly trust is even harder. There are so many options, but once you wade in to the sea, the price, location, style, vibe and even edits all play a roll in the final decision.
It is very similar to how I feel when another photographer asks me to shoot them in the context of their own family. It’s also incredibly nerve-racking! lol. As photographers, we all see things differently. That is part of the incredible beauty of this art form. You can have 5 different photographers take photos of the exact same person, in the same location during the same time of day, and you will get 5 completely different images. The camera settings, the posing, the use of light, prompts and how you choose to frame the image all plays a part in the final result… And then you have the editing process…
Just being honest here, I am a pretty confident person. Not cocky, but fairly sure of myself. I know what I am capable of and what I am not. I have done this long enough that I can with certainty, know that I will be able to produce a beautiful gallery for all of my clients. HOWEVER, when I was getting ready for Heather’s session, my hands were shaking. She is one of my close friends AND she is a fantastic newborn photographer as well!!! She asked me afterwards if I was nervous. Ummmm… YUP! I sure was! lol
Even with all of my nerves, we made magic happen. The evening was beautiful, the people were amazing, and the wardrobe was on POINT! *high five Heather*

OH MY STARS!!!!
This sweet mama contacted me wondering if I would travel to Arab to document her sweet boy in the place he loves the most. He has the incredible privilege of being raised on a cattle farm, and I was so excited to get to document this little person in the place that will define his childhood in so many ways.
I arrived with an optimistic attitude towards the weather… Well, it started POURING! This was literally the only time I have ever had to cancel a session I was actively shooting and reschedule. I felt so bad (I know how much goes in to getting ready for photos, believe me!!!) but as I looked around their property with the rolling hills and green pastures… I had gotten some great shots, but we were wet, and I just knew it was what we needed to do.
I am quite pleased to report that round 2 was everything I dreamed it would be!
Sunshine, giggles, exploring, snuggles, squeeze hugs, a pony named Chester and a calf named Sally Sue. It was absolute perfection! This little boy is adored completely and the joy he exudes when he is romping around on the family land is something that needs to be bottled up and spread around everywhere. No cares, no concerns, just happiness that starts in his toes and beams out of his eyes.
There aren’t very many places in North Alabama where you can get a view of the sky like this. The sunset was amazing and this cute little farmer just made it that much better. <3

This sweet family has been special from the very start. They invited me in to their home when their little boy was born, and even allowed me to bring along another photographer with who I was mentoring at the time. (You can check out my mentoring packages <– by clicking right there if you like.) They wowed me with the most gorgeous little boy nursery I have ever seen. Fast forward to their milestone session… Can I just say, the people who say “I trust you” and let me do what I want are just amazing!!! lol. So I did, and I fell in love with their sweet family even more. The baby basket, her dress (it’s in the JMP client closet by the way ;-) The wild flowers… Everything!
Speaking of my client closet. Isn’t this dress just gorgeous!!! Yup, you guessed it. It is now available for loan to all of my clients, tucked safely away, just waiting to be borrowed and photographed. <3
Now this…
I don’t know how much more gorgeousness I can handle. Seriously. I have gotten to document these beautiful humans since the beginning of their great adventure of parenting. They simply can’t contain their JOY that this little boy gives them. All of the giggles and snuggles make me grin every time I look at these.
Spring time is just about my absolute favorite on 5 Oaks Farm. There is so much life and light and green everywhere I look. The more we work on the property, the better it gets! It’s my favorite place to shoot. There is something about not having strangers around, walking past, looking at what we are doing that makes the experience so much MORE! I get to help families create real memories. All the while, I have a camera in my hand capturing all of it.
It is simply my favorite. <3

I think it’s pretty obvious that spring is HERE!!! All the lush green grass is sprouting, the leaves growing, the flowers budding… I am pretty intentional to schedule very few outdoor sessions between December and April for 3 reasons.
1) It’s cold, the weather is a lot less predictable and it’s simply not very pretty out.
2) I typically need a break. The Fall “busy season” is a LOT of work! Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE IT. I do however have to set boundaries for how many sessions I am capable of taking on, but I am horrible about trying to fit one more client in. It turns in to me over working myself. On top of the crazy that comes with the holidays, I seriously need a less busy period once the new year hits.
3) Running a small business is a lot of work. About 20% of what I do is actually taking photos. lol. Much of the maintenance of JMP happens in those cold winter months. Updating websites, new product development, blog submissions, gear maintenance, updating the resources and literature I provide my clients, education and online research, client wardrobe expansion, scheduling and so much more!
BUT
When spring hits, and I am just ITCHING to get outside and document all of the beauty.
Spring is here, and I am so excited!!!
I love this family. I can’t think of better humans to photograph to celebrate the start of my “official” shooting season!!! I have had the privilege of documenting this sweet little boy since he was born. This was the last session in his baby plan, but his mama told me that she is now expecting their second!!! I can’t wait to snuggle their new one and watch them grow as well. <3 <3 <3

So… The voting has started for the 2019 Shoot & Share Competition, and I am just NOW getting around to blogging how I did LAST year. lol.
I know… I am SO behind. It’s comical really. But things that aren’t needed for survival often get pushed down the priority list. I have just accepted it. ;-)
BUT
I need to document this journey, because something amazing happened last year!
Because in this international competition, where 412,379 images were submitted, I ended up in the top 100 family photographers AND in the top 100 for children’s photography as well!!!
I was seriously freaking out when I found out!!!
So here goes. I submitted 50 images, and out of those 50, 35 made it in the top 30% or above!!! <3

I can’t help but smile as I watch this… This little man is quite obviously loved beyond measure. His birthday was such a beautiful afternoon filled with snuggles, giggles, kisses, balloons and complete adoration! I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed being invited in to document such a special occasion.
There are moments that pass us by in an instant. Some of them are small, but it seems that the ones that have more weight and sentiment pass just as quickly as the little ones. Why is that? I can’t help but feel sad just a little as my own babies grow. There is so much wonder, innocence and simplicity in these younger years. It’s not easy by any means. Too often we as parents absorb the brunt of teething, sniffles and all of the work of parenthood. It can create a haze that makes the glasses we look at life through a bit hazy and sometimes a little blue.
But then there are those moments that cut through that haze. They remind us to look back and see how far we have come, and how amazing the journey really is! That we are actually SUCCEEDING and it’s not because we were the best parents on the block, but because we know our children, and we love them well.
These are the times that we need to be determined to remember.
To never forget the sweet moments.
To remember the journey.
To be grateful for the reality.
Birthdays have always been a time that draw me in to this process. Parenting is HARD, but as each of my children get a little bit older, I can’t help but admire how beautiful our life really is. It’s not perfect, but it’s ours, and it’s real, and that is far better than perfect will ever be.

Every once in a while, I get the opportunity to meet extraordinary people. People who are just sweet and kind. People who are strong in ways I have never had to be. This sweet little one was born with a heart defect and after 2 surgeries (with another one on the horizon) and she is now a happy, thriving completely loved little angel. I am so honored to be trusted with these moments and so excited to give this sweet family the gift of tangible memories. Photography for me, has been, and always will be, first and foremost about relationships and memories. These short years when we have little ones at home with us, depending, clinging and resting in their complete confidence in our love, go by way too fast. I do personally look forward to the future, as my husband and I gain more freedom as they grow older, but I know without a doubt, that these moments while they are still little, will be ones I cherish for the rest of my life.
I do *this* because I don’t ever want to forget. <3
