Any time someone contacts me asking about documenting their newborn, I typically ask if they had considered a maternity session as well. Some say no, and I don’t push at all, but some say yes. I ask for 2 reasons. First, is that I offer a discount when a maternity session is purchased along side of a newborn session. They go hand in hand in my mind, and I want to offer an incentive to those who are want to document their moments with me. The second reason is much more sentimental.
This time, right before the birth of a new little life, is so precious. It doesn’t matter if you are welcoming your 1st babe or your 5th. Once that little soul is born, your world is changed forever. Even though it is the best kind of change, (the kind that forces you to grow, to love and to stretch in sometimes uncomfortable ways) having a child changes you on the inside just as much as it changes everything on the outside.
So I ask… “Would you like to add on a discounted maternity session?”, not because I am just trying to “up-sell”, but because this BEAUTIFUL reality that you know right now will be no more so very very soon. With all of the anticipation, soreness of pregnancy and waiting, it is over in a blink. This quiet time prepares us for all that is to come.
It is worth documenting.
It is worth remembering.
It is beautiful.

When Stephanie contacted me, I honestly almost referred her to a different photographer.
You see, I had a baby only 3 months before her wedding date, and I had told my husband that I wasn’t going to take on any weddings for a year!
I am so glad I changed my mind. <3
There was so much “depth” and history between these two families. To see the joy and comfort that they give, not only to each other, but also to the others family, was a beautiful thing to see. Friends that had walked through the tough times together gathered around in celebration, of 2 hearts that have finally found the one that makes them complete.
These two love the Harry Potter books. There were subtle touches of it’s inspiration all through the details of their wedding. As I scouted out the venue, I saw this incredible tree. I knew I needed to create something special for them with it.
Some people might want doves on their wedding day. Others might just prefer white speckled owls. <3

Ok, so funny story,
I send out a questionnaire to all of my clients before their session. It’s a way for me to find out what you really want out of your session, the colors, the environment you are envisioning, unique family dynamics and I also ask for a little “insider info” if you have kids so I can connect with them a little faster and make them feel comfortable.
So I got the questionnaire back around 3 weeks before their session, and was “skimming” through…
- Bringing their 2 dogs – Check!
- Dogs are huge – Check!
- Lists all of their names – Check! (I am HORRIBLE with names. More on that in a sec)
- Chewy has 23 thousand followers on Instagram – WOW! Check!
- “Can we use some of the photos on his IG account?” – Of course! Check!
I reply and say everything looks great and of course they can use images on Instagram!
Fast forward to the day of their session… I am actually READING their questionnaire again (Trying to commit their names to memory because I suck at remembering names. Shoot! I can’t remember my own kids names half the time!) and realize that it isn’t her husband that has 23k followers on IG but their 150# Newfoundland dog Chewy’s account! HA!
So long story short. I suck at names. I try, but it really is not my strength, and I am sorry, but at this point it probably will get worse not better. lol
So this is me, introducing Chewy, the 3 year old 150# Newfoundland Puppy, with over THIRTY TIMES as many followers than I do! lol <3

I couldn’t love these people any more than I already do. They have been through so much, and have kept their eyes on what is important, and found hope in the middle of so much uncertainty. It’s beautiful really. To watch someone walk through horribly hard circumstances, and cling to each other instead of pushing away.
I can’t help but love these images, because they represent their whole world. The 3 of them. In love with each other, and genuinely enjoying their moments together.

There was a time I wondered if these images would ever get taken! We had to reschedule TWICE because of the weather and then at the last minute we did another schedule switch because I had a Saturday come available at the last minute and we new the weather would be nice.
With all of that said, I was PRAYING on the way to their session that it would be fantastic! Even though the reschedules were out of my control, this type of thing never happens and I just felt so bad!!! I desperately wanted it all to be worth it for this amazing family. <3
Fast forward a bit and I seriously couldn’t be happier with the images we got! Goodness!!! They are all gorgeous but on top of that we did some serious “bonding” with all of the fun we had. Jumping, running, twirling, laughing, kissing, snuggling, finding baby frogs, catching grasshoppers and just genuinely enjoying each other.
This family is amazing,
and it shows,
in every single image. <3

There are few things that I take as a higher compliment, then when another photographer asks me to photograph their family.
It’s not that photographers are “special” necessarily, but having someone else in the same field, that has trained their eye for editing, knows what to look for in posing, sees things that the average person doesn’t see in images, because they themselves have created/edited thousands themselves… When someone who has experience in photography, who in their own right is a fantastic photographer, asks me to document their precious moments, THAT is just special to me. <3
The beautiful Mama in these images, owns A Selah Moment here in Huntsville, and her husband just returned from a long deployment. I can’t imagine a better time to document this newly reunited family than this moment. I am so glad to have been her choice to give that to them!

This couple couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful evening!!! This wedding was also nothing short on personality and personal details. They said “I Do” at A.M. Booths Lumberyard in Huntsville Alabama and it’s eclectic old world charm was everywhere. I could go on and on but I will just stop and let you see for yourself. ;-)

Big families are my jam! I grew up in a large family (6 kids) and I have a big family (about to be 5 kids). As much as I crave a little silence and sometimes I go to bed and feel like my ears hurt from all of the lack of quiet throughout the day, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. There is a beautiful chaos that is forged in a home with all that never ending “noise”. Even when I don’t think I can handle another minute, it doesn’t take long for me to start thinking forward to the day when my house will be quiet and clean and I will wish my ears were tired.
So often, I am so busy being with and taking care of my kids I can’t climb out from under the pile of them wanting to “sit wif you” let alone have two hands to grab my camera. I know I am not alone… It’s why I love documenting these moments for others.

So often throughout the busier times of the year I don’t have time to THINK let alone go through the process of submitting my photos to any competitions or publications. Because I am so horribly neglectful during the busier months I try to make it a point to do so in the slower months. This is the first year I submitted to the Shoot & Share Photography Competition and I am super pleased with how these images placed!
A few stats about the competition: (because I am a nerd that way. lol)
- There were over 330,000 photos submitted
- Over 150,000 contributing artists
- 60,000,000 contest votes
- 159 countries were represented
I had NO idea what to expect and where I would rank on the international scale of so many talented photographers. I was a bit intimidated but I figured if I didn’t place at all I would just be quiet about it and not let anyone know I submitted anything in the first place. (just being honest. lol)
Out of 50 images that I submitted, I am excited to say that THIRTY of them won a badge!!! :-D
On to the RESULTS!!!
I had 3 images make it to the finalist round! This required that the images receive enough votes to make it to the top 3.5% of all the other images submitted. After the official results were released I found that these actually were closer to the top 1%. (YAY! Even better!!!)

I could have never dreamed I would do so well when competing on an international scale!!! I can’t wait to see what amazing images are around the corner this year. I have already collected a few images for next years submissions. ;-)

First babies are SO special.
To love someone so completely and so unconditionally is a miracle by itself. One tiny, little, completely dependent human can transform us from “regular people” in to a mother and father. It sounds so simple, except there is nothing simple about being a parent. It has a way of pulling every shred of selfishness out of you and turning it in to unconditional love. It then takes that love and turns everyday moments in to memories that are covered in pixie dust. My husband and I often said to one another after our first was born (when realizing that we had lost track of time, yet again, watching our new little one discover something new) “What did we fill our time with before having a child?” The memories are simply filled with magic.
Becoming a parent is transformational. It changes your mind and your heart. It is such a special time of life and I feel so full of gratitude to have others invite me in to their “right now” leading up to that gorgeous and special time when they get to meet the little one that will change their lives (and hearts) forever. <3
