I think it’s pretty obvious that spring is HERE!!! All the lush green grass is sprouting, the leaves growing, the flowers budding… I am pretty intentional to schedule very few outdoor sessions between December and April for 3 reasons.
1) It’s cold, the weather is a lot less predictable and it’s simply not very pretty out.
2) I typically need a break. The Fall “busy season” is a LOT of work! Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE IT. I do however have to set boundaries for how many sessions I am capable of taking on, but I am horrible about trying to fit one more client in. It turns in to me over working myself. On top of the crazy that comes with the holidays, I seriously need a less busy period once the new year hits.
3) Running a small business is a lot of work. About 20% of what I do is actually taking photos. lol. Much of the maintenance of JMP happens in those cold winter months. Updating websites, new product development, blog submissions, gear maintenance, updating the resources and literature I provide my clients, education and online research, client wardrobe expansion, scheduling and so much more!
BUT
When spring hits, and I am just ITCHING to get outside and document all of the beauty.
Spring is here, and I am so excited!!!
I love this family. I can’t think of better humans to photograph to celebrate the start of my “official” shooting season!!! I have had the privilege of documenting this sweet little boy since he was born. This was the last session in his baby plan, but his mama told me that she is now expecting their second!!! I can’t wait to snuggle their new one and watch them grow as well. <3 <3 <3

So… The voting has started for the 2019 Shoot & Share Competition, and I am just NOW getting around to blogging how I did LAST year. lol.
I know… I am SO behind. It’s comical really. But things that aren’t needed for survival often get pushed down the priority list. I have just accepted it. ;-)
BUT
I need to document this journey, because something amazing happened last year!
Because in this international competition, where 412,379 images were submitted, I ended up in the top 100 family photographers AND in the top 100 for children’s photography as well!!!
I was seriously freaking out when I found out!!!
So here goes. I submitted 50 images, and out of those 50, 35 made it in the top 30% or above!!! <3

I can’t help but smile as I watch this… This little man is quite obviously loved beyond measure. His birthday was such a beautiful afternoon filled with snuggles, giggles, kisses, balloons and complete adoration! I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed being invited in to document such a special occasion.
There are moments that pass us by in an instant. Some of them are small, but it seems that the ones that have more weight and sentiment pass just as quickly as the little ones. Why is that? I can’t help but feel sad just a little as my own babies grow. There is so much wonder, innocence and simplicity in these younger years. It’s not easy by any means. Too often we as parents absorb the brunt of teething, sniffles and all of the work of parenthood. It can create a haze that makes the glasses we look at life through a bit hazy and sometimes a little blue.
But then there are those moments that cut through that haze. They remind us to look back and see how far we have come, and how amazing the journey really is! That we are actually SUCCEEDING and it’s not because we were the best parents on the block, but because we know our children, and we love them well.
These are the times that we need to be determined to remember.
To never forget the sweet moments.
To remember the journey.
To be grateful for the reality.
Birthdays have always been a time that draw me in to this process. Parenting is HARD, but as each of my children get a little bit older, I can’t help but admire how beautiful our life really is. It’s not perfect, but it’s ours, and it’s real, and that is far better than perfect will ever be.

Every once in a while, I get the opportunity to meet extraordinary people. People who are just sweet and kind. People who are strong in ways I have never had to be. This sweet little one was born with a heart defect and after 2 surgeries (with another one on the horizon) and she is now a happy, thriving completely loved little angel. I am so honored to be trusted with these moments and so excited to give this sweet family the gift of tangible memories. Photography for me, has been, and always will be, first and foremost about relationships and memories. These short years when we have little ones at home with us, depending, clinging and resting in their complete confidence in our love, go by way too fast. I do personally look forward to the future, as my husband and I gain more freedom as they grow older, but I know without a doubt, that these moments while they are still little, will be ones I cherish for the rest of my life.
I do *this* because I don’t ever want to forget. <3

Laughter is truly good for the soul. This family knows how to laugh and to love well, and that joy made it such an enjoyable time together. We stood outside visiting until the stars came out. I can’t help but smile as I sort through and edit the images from their session. It is taking a bit longer than usual, but only because there are SO MANY beautiful and genuine moments. Their gallery is going to be HUGE! lol
Part of my job, and what honestly makes me really good at what I do, is that I understand how important it is to watch and notice the details. The way a husband kisses the top of his wife’s hair. The way a child wrinkles their nose when they smile at their sibling. The way a toddler rests their hand in the same spot in their mamas hair every time they are picked up.
You know what I noticed on this gorgeous Autumn evening? The way these sisters love each other. Pretty much every single family shoot I do, I see that adoration and beauty that beams from children towards their parents that is then reflected back at them. It’s my favorite part to be honest. But rarely do I see siblings with that same type of relationship. These two girls have something really special, and I want their parents to remember this beautiful season of their lives forever. Every single detail.

It was just about impossible for me to not smile the whole time I was editing these. I mean, seriously! I just can’t get enough of how happy they are. This little boy has brought so much joy along with his arrival, and getting to photograph it is such a beautiful experience.
It was a really cold morning and even though this little guy had an ear infection, he smiled the whole time. He is SUCH a happy little guy!
I have said it before, and I will say it again. In my experience, people are the most beautiful when they are in the presence of the ones they love the most. <3

This is the 4th year Michael and Michelle have come to me to document their family and I FREAKING LOVE them!!! They are not only wonderful parents, but the amount of playing we did was above and beyond their past sessions. <3 It was SO MUCH FUN!
Flying through the air, playing blanket monster on her daddy’s shoulders, twirling, snuggling (and lots of it because it was COLD), running and jumping, blanket games, tickle fights and lots of squeeze hugs. Oh!!! We even used our imaginations and pretended to play in the snow. ;-)
Seriously though, I have so much fun, every single year with them, and it is such a treasure that they choose me to document their moments every single year. <3
I have done a number of “magical” composite images for them over the year, but this year, they requested snow. <3 I knew almost immediately what I wanted to do!

I first met Ashley when she contacted me for maternity photos before her son was born. That was THREE years ago!!! I know I am completely not objective, (I mean, I have FIVE children after all.) but there is very little in this world that will soften, stretch, love, need, grow and change you like a baby will. As I talked with Starla, leading up to her session, we ended up connecting on so many levels! First off, she is a photographer herself. (I always consider it an extra special compliment when others in my field, ask me to document their moments for them. <3 ) We eventually got a bit more “deep” and she shared with me how hard and full of personal loss these past 2 years has been, but also, the beautiful hope this new little soul has brought to her family. As I listened, I felt myself put a bit of “extra” pressure on myself to make these images for this sweet family amazing.
The longer I do this, the more I realize how important it really is. I don’t ever want to produce “photos”. I want more. I want to use this artistic medium to not only document, but ultimately REMEMBER. When I shoot my own family, I do it because I want to have the certainty that I will never forget. I want to craft the images in such a way that the sight of one will bring memories right back to the moment and time that it was taken. To remember every single detail.
In the end, that is my “why” for pursuing photography. To simply have the certainty that I will never forget.
And that is my commitment to every single person that comes in front of my lens. To give them images that will help them remember the beautiful reality of their right now. Forever.
